Recorders - Northern Lights EP

This indie rock band, from Brussels, started in 2006, with influences like Interpol, Joy Division, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah!, The Libertines, The Strokes, Editors, Velvet Underground or Bloc Party (nothing bad, right !?)
Alex, Gordon, Math & Max have their own little (cfr. belgian) succes in 2007 and 2008, by winning the Demopoll contest from Studio Brussel (the best flemish radio station in Belgium), and the Puredemo contest from Pure FM (the best frenchspeaking radio station in Belgium). 'God, this country is complicated !

Followed by very cool concerts all over the country, and even in Paris, the band recorded his first EP, called Northern Lights !

Born in 1984, she studied illustration at St-Luc, a famous art school in Brussels, and still studies graphic communication.
Besides being a graphic designer and an illustrator, she paints, but not enough if you ask me...

the tuymans experiment

Klara.be (belgian cultural channel) did an experiment with Belgian painter Luc Tuymans (who's paintings go for millions). What if you take art out of its usual context and expose it in the street? Would people even notice it?
96% of passers-by ignore the painting...

the Chocolate Makers, vol. 8 *girls in hawaii*

Every generation has icons to look at, songs to dance and/or cry on and images to remember. This band is not revolutionary, but if you're still a bit young, French-speaking, and most of all Belgian, you ceased to be a kid with Girls in Hawaii.
a few years ago, in 2004, came 'from here to there' out. It was pretty much the first good rock band from Wallonia (the French-speaking, southern Belgium), and it became instantly our favourite band. Tracks were melancholic, concerts were strong & mind-blowing.

4 years later, after selling a few albums, a cover song for starbucks and even touring in the states, they're back with 'Plan your escape'. i hope the new adolescents will become adults with this one.

the Chocolate Makers, vol. 6 & 7 : the tellers + hooverphonic

* remember the tellers?
here is their last song (from a few months back...), hugo
if you like this, go here

* Then, there's a great band, touring for a while in the lowlands, called sharko.
So, I finally grabbed this one : sweet protection, and i love it !

* For your musical dessert : the new hooverphonic !
they had a trip hop period (2Wicky, in 1997), a jazzy one (The World is Mine, 2003), some ballads too (Eden, 1998).
Now it's back to rock 'n roll !

their new album is called
President of the LSD Golf Club
with gentle storm as their first single.
Expedition Impossible is their 2d one.

btw : we have a government, after 6 months of political crisis, but only for 3 months...

the Chocolate Makers, vol. 4, *Minerale*

Let's talk about a 4th belgian band : Minerale

They're a great band, created in 2001 by 4 friends from Brussels, but succes came only in 2005. They are called 'the young aristocrates of the belgian rock scene', very stylish. Their music has two different styles, 2 different approaches : very catchy pop-rock songs, and other songs which are more calm, almost accoustic around the fire...

third belgian band : Piano Club

4 guys, from Liège (Wallonia), the singer is also the bandleader of Hollywood Porn Stars, and the drummer plays in Malibu Stacy.
They describe themselfs as "Blondie eating ice cream with kim wilde, while duran duran's first record is playing. Then phoenix arrives and zoot woman brings some milkshakes. Piano club takes a picture and puts its own painting on it.... "

Anyway, they have a great song, called 'Girl on TV', and it has been remixed by Philippe Zdar from Cassius (!)

The Chocolate Makers, vol. 1, *the Tellers*

Belgium ... small country, amazing chocolate, superb beers ... and great bands !

You probably already know dEUS or Soulwax (or 2 many dj's), the pioneers in our modern musical landscape. But we have a new generation of bands, with great potential, so discover them, enjoy them! (and support them too...)

First band,

The Tellers
two guys, from the suburbs of brussels, very young, very talented.
the singer has the accent of Cardiff (thanks mom!), their song can be heard in a Canon ad. And I've seen them in concert at the ancienne belgique in november, they ruled !
our Arctic Monkeys, i guess...

also, their space
their great label, 62TV
and one song, second category (I've posted 'more' a few days ago...) from their EP
